ENGAWA

In traditional Japanese houses, the "engawa" refers to a wooden strip of flooring located inside the room, just before windows and shutters. It is now used as well to refer to veranda located outside the house (nure-en). Engawa or nure-en are most visible in temples and often offer beautiful views of wood and stones.

STONE LANTERNS

Stone lanterns can be found in private gardens but they were originally used in temples and shrines. They exist in many shapes and sizes. The below one was shot in a Shinto shrine.
